We have no access to about 80% of consciousness. The 80% corresponds to what psychologists would call ‘subconsciousness’ or ‘unconsciousness’.
However, we have access to about 20% of consciousness. This portion of consciousness allows us to set goals, imagine and act as we please.
The fact that we do not have control over 80% of consciousness does not mean that we do not have control over ourselves.
Indeed, we can normally function only because 80% of the consciousness works under cover.
This is just like how our hearts beat. We do not consciously make our heart beat at a regular rate. Our body takes care of the job so that we do not have to be too conscious of the heart. Thanks to such a mechanism, the heart manages to beat even when we lose consciousness in a process called sleep. Imagine what would happen if we must consciously make heart beat. The task would just be so overwhelming.
Therefore, in order to wisely use consciousness, we must direct our conscious attention only towards setting good goals, enjoying pleasant feelings et cetera. When we consciously set a good goal, our subconsciousness does almost all the job needed to get to the goal for us.
We must let the subconscious portion of our consciousness do the job on its own. If we try to interfere, the performance of subconsciousness will actually drop. We must admit that we only have access to 20% of our consciousness. Fortunately, this 20% is what gives us free will.
