Negative thoughts are thoughts like “my life is a failure”. Such thoughts often have the characteristic of being very general. If you are suffering from such thoughts, I urge you to throw a very important question to yourself. Are you really that wise and powerful? Do you truly possess power to make such a huge judgment about yourself?

 

Human beings are very distant from being omniscient and omnipotent. A human being cannot see a second into the future. With such limited abilities, how is it possible for a human being to make such a general judgment about life?

 

Negative thoughts do not arise from the underestimation of self. It is the opposite. Majority of negative thoughts arise as a consequence of the overestimation of self. If you truly accept the fact that you are a human being with limited capacities, you will come to realize that you don’t have the power to capture your life in a sentence as concise as “I am a failure”. Who are you to make such a broad and general appraisal of life? Only a transcendental being would be capable of making such a huge judgment.

 

While we as human beings are weak creatures, we fortunately have our bodies and minds. The former is not very powerful, yet it still is a wonderful biological machinery capable of many things. The latter is one of the most powerful apparatus that exists in this world. Human mind far exceeds many aspects of nature including mountains and rivers in its complexity and flexibility. Human life is full of pain and suffering, yet we can still go ahead with two great tools, our bodies and minds.
